Femmes of Fire (Always Surviving), Gladstone Hotel, 2019
Excerpt from Artist Statement:
Queer feminine identities are overlooked and invalidated in queer communities both in respect to gender/sexual hierarchies informing power and access and in micro and macro-aggressions toward queer femininities, which take place both at the conceptual level and on the ground in the lived experiences of these bodies. The figures within this work illuminate the existence of the queer body. This work is meant to embrace femininity in all forms, celebrate its existence and reconcile the trauma, hostile behaviour and anxiety toward queer femme identities. The figures in this work are placed as monumental figures that celebrate our resiliency, confirm our creativity and place queer femmes as leaders, who have always been at the forefront of our collective queer history.
