“Bursting with Love cultivates space, time, queerness and spirit. Collective conversations with ancestors, Anishinaabe creation story motifs, blend with queer femme aesthetics to tell an unexpected story."
“Equipped with these dreams and knowledge, I reimagine these intersecting worlds where Anishinaabe ideas of queerness and collective consciousness collide. It is an attempt to place-make: to shift the viewer’s ideas of gender and sexuality in the face of the current ongoing colonization of Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island. Ribbons reference the traditional ribbon skirt – a powerful symbol of surviving cultural genocide – and the spectrum of colours signifies the varied ancient histories of queerness that were once, and still are, so integral to First Nations peoples pre-colonization.
“The goal of this piece is to create joy. Past and future ancestors join, in one song, through freedom, hopeful within future histories and in tune with Mother Earth.”
